                                                                                        January 18, 2023
“Cape May – History by the Sea”
                                                                                        Ed Tokarsky
TOPIC: Many people think of Cape May, NJ as a place to go to in the summer for a vacation by the sea.  For those of us in Delaware we may think of Cape May as the New Jersey version of the Atlantic Coast of our Sussex County. While there are obvious parallels, it may not be appreciated that interesting, unique, and significant historical personalities and events occurred in the Cape May region which have had national and international consequences, beginning as early as the 15th century. Ed’s presentation will provide an overview of the rich history of this area and the impact it has had, and continues to have, even into the present day.
OUR SPEAKER: In the early 1980’s, Ed’s family started vacationing at the New Jersey shore. In 1984 they purchased a small cottage in the historic town of Cape May Point, which is an independent borough just to the west of the City of Cape May. The town was founded by John Wanamaker in the late 1800’s. It is also the location of the historic Cape May lighthouse. In the almost 40 years since then, they have met many who have had long family histories in the area and have developed knowledge of and a deep appreciation for the people and events of the region.
Recently, Ed was honored to be asked to be on the Board of the Cape May Point Taxpayers Association, and he has been a member of the Cape May County Historical Society.  Preparing for this presentation provided a wonderful opportunity for Ed to broaden and integrate his knowledge of the area.
LOCATION: Our meeting will be held at the Courtyard Newark at the University of Delaware, 400 David Hollowell Drive, on Wednesday, January 18, 2023. The social hour will begin at 6:15 PM, dinner at 7 PM, and Ed talk will follow.
