Juneteenth: Standing Up and Breaking Free
Friends of School Hill Association (FOSHA) is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to collect, preserve, and share materials and information about the history and culture of the historic, African American, New London Avenue (School Hill) Community in Newark, DE. They share by using exhibits, oral history presentations, cultural events, and by receiving local student field trips to learn about our history.
This year, FOSHA has taken the lead in planning a Juneteenth event. Juneteenth is a federal, State of Delaware and City of Newark holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. In the last ten years, several neighborhood organizations have held successful Juneteenth celebrations. Their 2023 event is scheduled for Saturday, June 17, 2023, at the George Wilson Community Center, 303 New London Road, Newark, DE 19711, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
